The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce that all Volusia County residents now have the opportunity to display an “Occupant with Autism” decal on their home or vehicle.
According to a release, the decal program alerts first responders to the possible presence of someone with autism in the vehicle or residence that may not react or respond to questions, or verbal commands, in the same way as others.
In addition to the “Occupant with Autism” decal, voluntary registration in this program allows the Volusia Sheriff’s Office Communications Center to enter a caution flag on the home address provided. Once a residence is flagged, any call for service at that address will generate a notification for responding units that someone with autism may be present. These notifications will be available to all first responders.
Volusia County Sheriff Deputies continue to receive special training on best strategies and approaches for law enforcement encounters with people on the autism spectrum.
Anyone who wants to participate can sign up and choose a decal (2 versions are available) at https://www.volusiasheriff.org/autism.stml.
