The Historic New Smyrna Beach Preservation Commission is excited to announce the commencement of the nomination process for the prestigious 2023 Donnadine Miller Memorial Historic Preservation Award. This annual award program recognizes and celebrates outstanding contributions to preserving and promoting the city's rich historical heritage.
The award honors both a single-family residential property and a non-residential property that exemplifies a commitment to preserving the past and fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the architectural legacy within New Smyrna Beach. Eligible properties must be at least 50 years old or sites associated with significant historical events. The nomination period for this esteemed accolade is open until December 29, 2023. Winning recipients of this award are encouraged to pursue local landmark designation; however, it's important to note that receiving the award does not impose any restrictions on the awarded property.
New Smyrna Beach’s historic preservation award program, established in 2002, has become a vital part of honoring the cultural and historical roots of New Smyrna Beach and was named in memory of Donnadine Miller, a beloved community member renowned for her active volunteerism and dedicated service, in 2009. Mrs. Miller, who served as chair of the Historic New Smyrna Beach Preservation Commission, was an amateur archaeologist and participated in various community events and activities.
The award presentation, anticipated to take place during an upcoming City Commission meeting, will see each winner honored with a distinctive bronze plaque. In the 2021 edition, the recipients were 210 Palmetto St. for the residential category and 214 Sams Ave. for the non-residential category.
To access the nomination application and obtain further details, interested parties can visit the Development Services building at 214 Sams Ave., the New Smyrna Museum of History at 120 Sams Avenue, or visit.
