A Celebration of Cuban Culture at MOAS
The Museum of Arts and Sciences (MOAS) is celebrating the reopening of the Cuban Gallery on Saturday, March 16 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with artwork, music, food, and community, and on March 17 with an event, Cuban Coffee with a Curator. MOAS continues its commitment to the Cuban Foundation Museum with a beautiful reinstallation of rare and historically significant works from the Collection.
With the support of the Fulgencio Batista Family and the FBZ Archivos Foundation, the Museum has been able to revitalize the interpretation of the exhibition. Located in the Cuba Gallery, works are arranged to highlight the art, as well as to emphasize the unique cultural story. New gallery colors have been chosen to accent the incredible range of styles represented by paintings, prints, furniture, and ceramics. In addition, the Museum has reinstalled bilingual interpretive text that interweaves the story of the five-hundred-year cultural exchange between Florida and Cuba. Ranging from the advent of the Spanish Colonial period in the eighteenth century to the height of Modern Art influences of the early twentieth century, this Collection of Cuban fine and folk art is considered one of the most important outside of Cuba. - Join Gary R. Libby, Cuban Art Historian, Educator, and Author, for a talk on the origins and influences of the Cuban School of Art. This talk will be followed by a book signing. Books are available for purchase in MOAS gift shop.
11:30 a.m. - 1:30.p.m.
Complimentary Cuban appetizers (while supplies last), music by DJ Jukebox Bully, and a cash bar featuring wine, beer, and specialty cocktails.

1:30 p.m. Cuban Gallery Talk & Walk with Juan Junco
Join Cuban Historian and MOAS Docent, Juan Junco, as he shares the unique history of Cuba and Batista's fascination with the Daytona Beach are. Learn why the Cuban gallery found its home at the Museum of Arts & Sciences. This talk will begin in the Root Family Auditorium.
SUNDAY, MARCH 17: Cuban Coffee with a Curator
Join Senior Curator of History, Zach Zacharias, in Root Hall to learn about the history and culture of the Cuban people through art. From as early as the 1600's, the Museum's Cuban collection shows us a wide variety of art heavily influenced by European art standards. An early European school of art in Havana in the early 1700's established the standards. Magnificent landscapes, portraits, still-life, and furniture make this an eye-opening talk about the once cultural center of Latin America. This Collection of Cuban fine and folk art is considered one of the most important outside of Cuba. Light Cuban pastries and Cuban coffee are included with paid admission. $25.00 for members, $30.00 for non-members. Museum admission included. Space is limited and advanced RSVP is required.
