Motorists traveling along South Riverside Drive in New Smyrna Beach should anticipate a brief detour onto Magnolia Street between 4th and 6th Streets. This temporary route is in effect as construction commences for a new bridge and the subsequent replacement of the existing 5th Street bridge over Yacht Club Cut.
According to a release, the ambitious project is scheduled for completion by September 2024, and will replace the current single-span 40 ft. long bridge with a four-span 160 ft. long design, reducing long-term maintenance costs by eliminating the need for retaining walls at the abutments and improving water quality by increasing flow and decreasing siltation in the channel.
In addition to the expanded size, the revamped bridge will feature essential elements such as paved shoulders, guardrails, and drainage enhancements. These improvements will significantly mitigate erosion concerns in the area.
For detailed information on the temporary traffic control plan and further inquiries regarding the project, interested individuals are encouraged to contact City Engineer Kyle Fegley via email at kfegley@cityofnsb.com or by phone at 386-410-2811 for any additional questions or concerns.
