With Florida Severe Weather Awareness Week beginning today, February 6, 2023, the Volusia County Emergency Management Division is reminding residents to prepare for disaster events. The week-long event, which runs through February 10, will focus on different severe weather events each day, providing education and tips on how to stay safe.

"Most people associate severe weather in Florida with hurricanes," said Emergency Services Director Jim Judge. "However, there are many other dangers that residents need to be aware of and prepared for."

According to a release, the topic of each day will be:

  • Monday: Lightning
  • Tuesday: Marine hazards and rip currents
  • Wednesday: Thunderstorms and tornadoes
  • Thursday: Hurricanes and flooding
  • Friday: Wildfires

As part of the event, the Emergency Management Division wants residents to review their disaster plans and participate in a tornado drill on Wednesday, February 8; many local schools have plans to participate.

For more information on Florida Severe Weather Awareness Week, residents can follow the Volusia County Emergency Management Division's Facebook page, where they will be posting information daily throughout the week to increase awareness.
