Hurricane Warning in effect for Volusia County.

With the threat of Tropical Storm Nicole looming over Florida, Volusia County is now under a Hurricane Warning, meaning Hurricane-force winds are expected within the next 36 hours. The latest forecast puts the peak wind forecast at 45-60 MPH, with wind gusts up to 80 MPH between Wednesday evening through Thursday afternoon. Potential wind speeds can range from 74 to 110 MPH, the equivalent of a Category 1 or Category 2 Hurricane.

Residents should prepare for considerable wind damage from the storm and make final preparations to protect their life and property now. Coastal residents who sustained damage to their homes or properties during Hurricane Ian, and do not feel safe in their homes, should move to a safe shelter before the wind speeds become hazardous.

A life-threatening storm surge of 3 to 5 feet is possible through early Thursday morning, making the threat of flooding reach over 3 feet above the ground. Those in a low-lying flood-prone area who experienced widespread flooding with Hurricane Ian or coastal residents near damaged seawalls should make any final preparations needed to secure property and homes before moving to a safer location as soon as possible.

Conditions of the storm are favorable for tornadoes, which can hinder any emergency plans. If your shelter is vulnerable to tornadoes, such as a mobile home or RV, it is best to seek a safer shelter immediately before hazardous weather begins.

Tropical Storm Nicole is forecasted to make landfall in Brevard County around 7:00 a.m. on Thursday and could be a Category 1 Hurricane. Now is the time to make final preparations and arrangements for sheltering in place.
