Several schools in New Smyrna Beach are implementing curricula to educate and empower students about the dangers of drugs and violence provided by the nationwide nonprofit Law Enforcement Against Drugs & Violence, or L.E.A.D.

Beginning Monday, August 14, third and fifth-grade students from Read-Pattillo Elementary School, Coronado Elementary School, Chisholm Elementary School, and Sacred Heart School, along with sixth and eighth-grade students from New Smyrna Beach Middle School, will engage with this comprehensive program during their school day, under the guidance of the New Smyrna Beach Police Department, Police Officer Dysheka Price will serve as the primary instructor for the L.E.A.D. program, with School Safety Officer (SSO) Margaret Deal providing support as required.

Trained by L.E.A.D. to teach the program’s proven effective curriculum, both officers will teach approximately 800 students in New Smyrna Beach this educational initiative, which aims to raise awareness about the risks associated with drugs and violence, while also teaching skills such as goal setting, emotional management, and wise decision-making.

"We are excited to welcome the New Smyrna Beach Police Department as partners in our mission. Our curriculum equips students with the understanding and tools to avoid the pitfalls of alcohol, drugs, and violence, ensuring their success now and in the future. We are delighted that officers from the department will be facilitating the L.E.A.D. program for the children in New Smyrna Beach," stated Nick DeMauro, CEO of L.E.A.D.

L.E.A.D., known for its community-centric initiatives, brings law enforcement agencies and local communities together through its "On the Street" and "In the Classroom" 10-week programs, delivered by 3800 trained instructors across 41 states and focuses on a law enforcement-centered anti-drug and anti-violence curriculum for students from kindergarten to twelfth grade.

New Smyrna Beach Police Captain Jason Reve emphasized the program's unique ability to foster a personal and consistent connection between law enforcement officers and students.

"The L.E.A.D. program provides an opportunity for Officer Price and SSO Deal to engage with the students in a meaningful way. This aspect of the program will undoubtedly build a strong bond between our department and the students, promoting substance abuse prevention, healthy choices, and a safe environment," said Captain Jason Reve. "While drug education is a core component, the L.E.A.D. curriculum equips students with tools to identify and report bullying, violence, and crimes. It encourages effective communication, conflict resolution, and emotional competency. This well-rounded approach sets students up for success in all facets of their lives, fostering a foundation that will benefit them throughout their educational journey and beyond."

L.E.A.D. fosters partnerships between law enforcement agencies, educators, community leaders, and families by reinforcing mutual respect and goodwill, L.E.A.D. is committed to building stronger relationships and safer environments.
