In a special recognition preceding their regular meeting on Monday, October 2, 2023, the New Smyrna Beach Planning & Zoning Board took a moment to honor the dedicated service and significant contributions of Chair Sandra Smith, who recently retired from her role. Smith, a seasoned expert with over three decades of experience in urban and regional planning, served as an invaluable member of the all-volunteer city advisory board for the past six years.
During the gathering, Planning Manager Stephanie Doster acknowledged Smith's remarkable dedication, stating, “She has given countless hours of review and support to the function of this board. We would like to thank you for your volunteered expertise, continuous participation, and leadership contribution to the success of this board.”
“This job is not a walk in the park. You are the center of attention on goods and not-so-goods, so I appreciate your steadfast leadership and your commitment to trying to make our town stay something that we want it to be, a charming coastal community that we all love to stay at and be at," said Mayor Fred Cleveland, emphasizing the significance of responsible growth in the community and recognized Smith's role in achieving this goal. “We live in America, where you do not need a permission slip to move anywhere in the country. We are on the map, and so New Smyrna is on the map. It is our job to ensure that as we grow, it is the growth that we enjoy and can appreciate, and you have done your part on that.”
The board and community are grateful for Smith's lasting impact on the development and character of the town.
