On November 11, a cat tested positive for rabies, which has caused the Florida of Department of Health in Volusia County to issue a rabies alert for areas within the City of Edgewater. Rabies spreads through the wild animal population, so residents and visitors should be wary.

The recent rabies alert is effective for 60 days and the epicenter spans from S. Riverside Dr. to Ridgewood Ave. More boundaries include:

  • Eastern Boundary, the Indian River waterbody
  • Northern Boundary, Indian River Blvd. 442
  • Southern Boundary, 26th St., and 27th St.
  • Western Boundary, Juniper Dr.

Other impacted areas include Read Edgewater, Mariners Gate, Friendly Shores, Pelican Cove, Pelican Cove West, Silver Ridge, and Majestic Oaks.

Alerts only help spread awareness, but civilians must take precautions. Rabies is a nervous system disease and is fatal to warm-blooded animals and humans. To prevent infection, make sure that all domestic animals are vaccinated.

If your pet has contracted rabies or made contact with a wild animal, contact Animal Services at (386) 248-1777.

Persons who have been bitten or scratched may call the Florida Department of Health in Volusia County at (386) 274-0634 to report the injury and seek immediate medical attention.
