In April 2021, the City of New Smyrna Beach City Commission voted and agreed with a unanimous vote to join the American Flood Coalition.
The American Flood Coalition is a national, non-partisan, nonprofit alliance of elected officials, civic groups, and municipalities advocating for initiative-taking solutions to flooding and sea-level rise.
According to a release, Florida has 1,200 miles of coastline exposed to the effects of flooding and sea level rise, to which homes have lost over $5.4 billion in property value since 2005.
The City of New Smyrna Beach now joins 263 Coalition members across twenty-one states. Membership provides the city with access to Coalition resources, which includes its networks of leaders, competitive local resilience pilots, and a platform for advocacy and education, at no cost to the city.
