Jones Edmunds & Associates, Inc., an engineering firm hired by the City of New Smyrna Beach to analyze local flooding experienced during Hurricane Ian and review city stormwater regulations, is hosting a public kick-off meeting on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. in the Brannon Center at 105 S. Riverside Drive in New Smyrna Beach.

The goal of the meeting is to discuss the flood study and allow residents to share their input and observations.

According to a release, throughout the study, a moratorium is in effect that prohibits new residential development projects on properties 10 acres or larger in FEMA Flood Zones A & AE until June 27, 2023. Throughout the project, the team will:

  • Acquire topographic and flood scenario-related data
  • Compare city stormwater codes and standards to similar communities in Florida
  • Perform an Exposure Analysis to identify the depth of water caused by Hurricane Ian
  • Analyze the impact of large new developments and their associated stormwater management systems
  • Draft a Final Report including a geodatabase containing model input layers and results
  • Present their findings to the City Commission on May 2

Water Resources Managing Director & Senior Vice President Brett Cunningham will lead the meeting. His expertise extends to flood protection, water quality, water supply, natural systems, integrated water resources planning, wastewater collection systems, and funding procurement. He applies computer models and geographic information systems to assist in planning, problem-solving and developing management strategies.

Those unable to attend the meeting in person can view the live video and replay of public meetings on the Agendas & Minutes page by clicking the View Event link.
