Mayor Fred Cleveland and New Smyrna Beach Police Chief Eric Feldman joined forces during the New Smyrna Beach City Commission's regular meeting on Tuesday, November 28, to commend Sergeant James Sharkey for his exceptional planning and execution of the largest active shooter training exercise ever held in Volusia County at the renowned Daytona International Speedway.
Sergeant Sharkey, a retired SWAT commander, was chosen for his unique expertise in the field, and over a meticulous five-month period, he successfully orchestrated the involvement of approximately 400 personnel from every first responder agency across the county during the event.
The commendation ceremony included the presentation of a Commendation Certificate and plaque to Sergeant Sharkey, acknowledging his outstanding contributions to enhancing the county's preparedness for such critical situations. The exercise, which drew participants from various public safety agencies, showcased the significance of interagency communication and coordination under a unified command structure.
In the aftermath of the event, local public safety leaders have recognized the need to build upon Sergeant Sharkey's success. They are actively considering and implementing measures to further improve communication and coordination among different agencies during emergencies.
