North Causeway Project Begins March 4
FDOT project to replace North Causeway hydraulic cylinders begins March 4; limited 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. closures expected.
The Florida Department Of Transportation (FDOT) is set to begin a crucial maintenance project on the North Causeway moveable bridge over the Indian River, also known as the Coronado Beach Bridge, to ensure uninterrupted service and extended functionality for years to come. The work will involve the removal and replacement of the bridge's hydraulic cylinders and the accompanying machinery critical for the operation of the moveable span. These hydraulic cylinders are a vital component that enables the bridge to open and close, allowing marine vessels to pass through the Indian River safely.
Although the contract for this project is scheduled to be initiated on March 4, there will be no closures at the time of the project's commencement. The contractor will begin the project working underneath the bridge and preparing materials in their equipment laydown yard near the structure, which will not disrupt vehicle or marine traffic access. FDOT has taken care to plan the project's execution to minimize impacts to the commutes of New Smyrna Beach residents and visitors. Accordingly, the North Causeway will remain open and fully accessible to motorists for the majority of the project’s duration. Marine traffic access will be maintained at all times.
However, given the nature of the work, this project will require limited closures of the North Causeway to vehicle traffic. These closures are strictly confined to a maximum of eight weeknights throughout the entire project, occurring during overnight hours from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. These closures will not be scheduled on Saturdays, Sundays, major holidays, or during special events. Any necessary overnight closures and/or project updates will be communicated in advance through the FDOT’s Central Florida Roads project webpage at cflroads.com/project/449359-1. Construction schedules are subject to change pending weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
During the brief closure periods, motorists will be redirected to the adjacent South Causeway. Electronic message boards and detour signage will guide drivers around the construction zone to ensure minimal disruption to traffic flow. Please follow posted signage, avoid distractions, and drive cautiously in work zones.
Given the overnight timing and brief nature of the closures, an alternative route for low-speed vehicles, such as golf carts, will not be provided. Please plan your commute accordingly.
