New Smyrna Beach City Commissioners, accompanied by American Indian Committee Chair Lori Bates and Vice Regent of the Jane Sheldon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution Jennifer Fox, came together at their regular meeting on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, to officially declare the forthcoming month of November as National American Indian Heritage Month in New Smyrna Beach.
At the meeting, Mayor Fred Cleveland took the lead in reading the proclamation aloud, highlighting the profound influence of American Indians and indigenous peoples on the history and culture of the United States.
"The history and culture of our great nation have been significantly influenced by American Indians and indigenous peoples. I urge all our citizens to observe this month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities," said Mayor Cleveland. This proclamation aims to honor the rich heritage and contributions of American Indians, acknowledging their role in shaping the diverse tapestry of the United States.
In addition to this symbolic declaration, residents and visitors can explore an informative exhibit showcasing Native American artifacts. These artifacts were collected by some of New Smyrna Beach's early settlers and offer a unique insight into the history and heritage of the region's indigenous people.
This exhibition at the New Smyrna Museum of History, at 120 Sams Avenue in New Smyrna Beach, is open to the public from Tuesday through Saturday, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Within its walls, guests can learn about the first people to inhabit Florida and gain a deeper understanding of their way of life.
